|This photo of the members of the Police Department of the City of York, Pennsylvania was taken in 1887, approximately one month after York became a city.
The officer with a cane wearing the long opera-style coat in the center of the front row is H. Samuel Spangler, Chief of Police. The remaining officers are wearing their summer uniforms, consisting of a bowler hat with insignia and a three-piece sack suit with police badge.
The officer in the front row, far left is officer George W. Adams, who served as the lamplighter for the Borough of York. His lamplighter's ladder is on display at the Police Heritage Museum.
It is believed that the officers are still wearing their Borough of York badges, an example of which is also on display at the museum.
