|This studio photo shows police officer George W. Adams of the Borough of York, Pennsylvania, circa 1860.
The majority of the police officers were assigned a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. shift, and one of their duties was to light and extinguish the natural gas street lamps in their patrol area.
Officer Adams' lamp lighter's ladder is currently on display at the Police Heritage Museum, thanks to the generosity of Officer Adams' family.
