Police Car Show

Police Heritage Museum logo

In 2003, the Police Heritage Museum started an event that was designed to bring people to downtown York, and to the museum site, as well as help to fulfill our mission. The Rendezvous at Yorktowne - Wheels of Law Enforcement Show was our first of several police vehicle shows to be held in York, and was held on Saturday, October 4, 2003.

Although the day started out damp and cool, and ended with a rain shower, for several hours we were treated to a block and a half of active and retired police vehicles on display for all to enjoy. A total of 27 trophies were awarded to individuals and departments for the vehicles they had on display. The trophies were sponsored by several generous local businesses and individuals and were a highlight of the event.

On Saturday, October 2, 2004, our second police vehicle show was held in downtown York. Learning from our first show, some subtle changes were made. A total of 53 different law enforcement vehicles were on display. A total of 32 trophies were awarded to individuals and departments for the vehicles they had on display.

Our third police vehicle show was held on Saturday, October 1, 2005 in downtown York. In 2005, we added a military law enforcementvehicle class as well as a replica law enforcement vehicle class. Our third show was another success.

A Change In Venue

In 2006, after feedback from some of our attendees, we opted to make some changes to the car show. The show was moved into late September, and the show was relocated to the Springettsbury Township Park east of York to coincide with another event being held at the park. The show remained a success, with a total of 34 trophies awarded at the show.

Our 2007 and 2008 police car shows were also help at Springettsbury Township Park. However, we noticed a decrease in attendance at the 2008 show.

Re-evaluation

At the June 2009 monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Police Heritage Museum, Inc., a discussion was held regarding the future of the Wheels of Law Enforcement police vehicle show. Among the many issues discussed were the location and date of the show, visitor and participant comments, staffing issues at the event, the state of the economy and its effect on the 2009 car show, and whether or not the event still meets the goals set when the event was first established in 2003.

After a lengthy discussion of the board members in attendance at the meeting, it was decided to forgo holding the event in 2009, to give the staff of the Police Heritage Museum a chance to evaluate the above issues and to determine the future of the event.

Discussions regarding the police vehicle show continuted throughout 2010 and 2011, however, other issues at the museum took priority over the police vehicle show. For now, the 2008 show was the last show. But, we have not ruled out ever having a car show again. If and when we do, we want to ensure that it is done right, and that it falls within our mission statement.
